The Grays Harbor County Board of Commissioners (“BOCC”) is seeking interested and qualified individuals for appointment to the Grays Harbor Fire District 8 Board of Commissioners (“District Board”).

I. What does the District Board do? 

In general, the District Board:

  • protects an expanding permanent population that resides over 23 square miles and a fluctuating tourist population that increases dramatically during clam tides, holiday weekends, and other special events throughout the year.
  • governs the District’s budget and resources. The District has an approximate annual revenue of $800,000 dollars. The District Board compiles the annual budget every November and reviews budget and cash positions every month.
  • negotiates, executes, and administers agreements with businesses and other governmental agencies.
  • ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • promotes a positive image within the district, the county, and the state.

The District Board holds meetings on the second Thursday of every month.

II. Who is eligible to apply?


To be eligible for appointment, the candidate must (1) be a U.S. citizen, (2) be a registered voter, and (3) be a resident of Fire District 8.

III. What is the application and interview process?

1. BOCC Representative. Interested persons are encouraged to submit a completed application to the BOCC Clerk:

2. Completed application. A completed application means:

  • a signed letter of interest and
  • a completed application form that
  • is delivered in person, by mail, or electronically to the BOCC Representative identified in Section 1 not later than the date and time specified in Section 3.

3. Application due date. Applications are due no later than May 15, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. PST.

4. Candidate interviews. The BOCC will interview each candidate via Zoom during an open public meeting. The BOCC will ask each candidate a standard set of questions and, where necessary to understand a candidate’s response to any question, the BOCC may ask follow-up questions. In the event of a substantial number of applicants, the BOCC may elect to interview a smaller number of candidates.


5. Announcement of appointment.
Following candidate interviews and one or more executive sessions to evaluate candidate qualifications, the BOCC will appoint the new commissioner by majority vote in an open public meeting

What factors will the BOCC consider?
When considering a candidate for appointment to the District Board, the BOCC will consider factors including but not limited to:

  • The candidate’s commitment to serve the best interests of the District’s residents, guests, and fire department personnel.
  • The candidate’s experience with public funds, budget, and human resources.
  • The candidate’s ability to fully participate in District Board meetings.
